This year's festival of St. John the Hermit was more than spectacular ,we had wonderfull weather and great people .All the way from Malia we had Karolina and Martina two beautifull girls who made the sky brighter and with their beautifull smiles made a joyful atmosphere there were about 100 visitors who came in honor of the Miracoulous Saint others praying for health purposes and others for personal and economical reasons ,no matter what they prayed for they all said that they are more then satisfied of the outcome ,and that they will return next year to honor the Hermit .Who has helped them at least once in their lives, many of the worhipers brought with them Artos, Holy Bread as an offering and they give it away peace by peace As for the Koukoutsakis Family they made a barbeque ,Antonis Koukoutsakis and his wife Harriet !Yes my parents cooked juicy and tender steaks for everyone. Pavlos and Yiannis Koukoutsakis gave out sweets, cheese pies and other delicacies. And all the way from Temenia Mr .Giorgos Lazopoulakis brought some of his very own strong red wine ,just like Manolis Giakoumakis did ,he drank and told us of the old and good days when he also was a resident of Azogires as a child. How crazy and proud the Azogirians were ,and how hospitable and warm hearted .Stories that make our hearts break .Hope to see you to next year on this unique and truly traditional festival on 8th October I added some photos of the cave that was Saint Johns home ,cause I fell in love with the hanging birds nest on the caves ceiling you can still see the stone built bed that he slept on. Its a very spiritual place to be ,the energy is amazing.

Forgive me for not updating the blog in a long long time but Ive been up to 1000 chores .Ill start from October when we had the grape picking in Azogires .Mr.Gerard a very respected business man from Holland ,came all the way to Azogires to do the grape picking and the grape stumpping .He had help from the recently arrived lady from Uk Anne .They stumped treaded and barreled the grapes all ready for raki,it was a spectacular experience we call grape therapy. Then came time to make the Raki??yes I know time to drink it too as we did indeed. Karolina and Craig came all the way from Malia to participate in raki therapy which is quite effective, we had souvlakis potatoes chestnuts and ofcourse raki people sat around the fire romanticaly watching the flames and getting drunk .Others fell off the plateau others fell in ditches others just went on drinking until morning, but nobody got seriously hurt. And we all enjoyed our traditional Cretan evening of mass raki consuption .The most important part of the evening was when we had a suprise entry from my uncle Yiannis Paterakis as he told us stories of the past , as he has taken part in many raki evenings, it was an amazing experience. It took me a week to sober up and start laying the olive nets.We had volunteers all the way from Denmark Mr. Mikkel and his Wife helped us lay out and clear the fields .It was all to much for me and I was sleeping on the job so they didnt pay me ,since then its been olive picking every several weeks .One of my most favorite working therapys. Then came the Snow ,after having warm and sunny days.It arrived like a shock snow everywhere about a centemeter thick .I was so pleased to see winter and I enjoyed every minute of it.This is where I must leave you and wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us in Azogires, with love.

Guess ? who was the winner ,yes you got it right ,Jessica Hale. After kicking everyones ass she decided to take a bite of the Gingerbread house made by Anna Maria Schaab. My complaint is she ate all the Jelly babies of the house ,and I was left with nothing

The past few months have been a bit hard in Azogires I will start by telling you that the river became so high this winter that it made the main road in to a second river right thru the middle of the town .Not to mention that olive trees and 200 year old stone walls came tumbling down like paper ,but Azogires is still intact and in one peace .Weve had hale 3 times this year , one of those times the hale reached egg size and literaly thrased everything .But again no serious damages done, like in Kountoura where they had 3 million euros worth of damage on the greenhouses. Azogires got away with it ,with just a few fallen leaves .Which the other 2 situations were not the same , the first took place on 7th October around 2 in the afternoon causing serious damages to the Azogires olive crop and the second just about a week and a half ago, late evening after a day of clear blue sky the street was just filled with hale, and here is the odd part of this story both times there was a Gentlemen visiting our village .To speak more clear he came to visit us twice in two diferent years and both of the times he visited we had serious hale storms, so I've added a photo of this rather charming and smiling Gentlemen, that he may be recognized wherever he goes.Locals have started to refer to him as Mr.catastrophy .I on the other hand sugested that he go and sell his services to rich Arabic countries with vast deserts ,cause he is guarenteed to bring hale storms, wherever he goes ,therefore he can bring life to dried out areas .Ps all of the above is not a joke it happend in Azogires.

With joy I would like to inform you of a wedding, that took place in Azogires. The Village of Koukoutsakis worldwide ,Kaliopi Koukoutsakis came all the way, from Athens to join with the love of her life Nikos Stagakis. Her proud parents Vangelis and Athina Koukoutsakis arrived two whole weeks earlier with a huge crew ,to help them make it all possible. We were all thrilled to hear that she will move permanately back to Crete. The wedding ceremony was unlike any other I have ever seen ,only from Athens arrived about 200 people besides the loacals who stormed the Azogires countryside drunk with joy and happiness, the party started on Friday night and finished on Sunday. The actual wedding took place, on Saturday afternoon at the Monastery of the 99 Holy Fathers ,it was such a posh wedding that even the waiters and chefs arrived from Athens ,we were served by the same people ,who used to work at the famous Ecali club

.It was amazingly modern and prototype for Cretan standards ,but at the same time, so very tradittionally Creten. There was a band of Creten Musicians who led the bride all the way to the Church ,followed by the best man's company ,it was the greatest time of my life, I wish them a healthy and wealthy life ,full with joy and happiness !.

FAREWELL TO 3 GOOD FRIENDS

I have lost three good friends this year and it breaks my heart.

I have finally found the courage to say somethingbecause it is my duty to remember those who cared for me as one of their own. In the beginning of the year I lost my dear friend Sam Reed. Author of the book FRACTURED DREAMS AND SUNFLOWERS, he was a man who made me laugh every single minute. He was next to me with his wonderful stories and his amazingly clever jokes; he will remain in my heart for life.

Early in the summer Lynne Tait, co author of TEN WALKS AROUND PALECHORA, and another books of walks in our wild Cretan mountains, passed away. She had walked every gorge, every hill and every valley of our area. She was the brightest star of tourist information on Crete, while at the same time she kept her self away hidden in the Cretan mountains where she and her husband had built a beautiful house, practically on their own.

Finally, less then a month ago Madame Anna Fistarol, a lady with class and honour, who always made me feel happy and relaxed, passed away.

I am sure that all three are sitting above the clouds and keeping an eye on the rest of us

MUSIC EVENTS IN AZOGIRES

It was mid summer when my good friends Meena and Jean Marc came to Azogires for their summer vacation, along with two very famous musicians, or should I say music Gods, Carl Wyatt and Archie Lee Hooker. As they were relaxing on my veranda they turned around and said "Lets fill this place with life". So, whilst we got busy putting out posters for a Blues Night in Azogires, Carl headed out in search of a bass player and drummer, returning only hours before the gig with two very good musicians, Theo and Roberto, from the Greek rock group "Arrapao". With the right training from Carl Wyatt in just a few hours they became blues experts. As soon as people heard who it was all about they came storming to the village. Before long the road was blocked as people took to the street dancing. It went on all night long as no one could stop grooving in the blues rythim, especially when Archie sang his uncles song "Boom, boom, boom, boom". Everyones heart was pounding, the band was exausted and they wanted to stop playing but everyone kept shouting "More, more". People adored it, they were leaving little thank you notes on the tables saying it was the best night they ever had . The band did the show voluntarily, taking no money at all for their time and effort but simply enjoying to give life to the village once more in the best way anyone can imagine possible. For this I send from all the Azogirians a HUGE and heartfelt thanks. * we only say one thing guys we woship you, *

A few weeks later Johny Human, also a musician and a resident of Azogires, came down to the cafe with his acordeon and played for us all. The place filled once again only this time the street was not closed by dancers but by a future tai chi master who was here with Master Lydias Tai Chi group. He took his sword and, under the influence of Johny's music, he went out into the road and gave us a lesson or two in tai chi.

And it didn't stop there. Over the following days others came to just play too in Azogires, like my good english friend and artist John. He has restored a 100 year old violin and he plyed for us in the same spot where Carl Wyatt and Archie Lee Hooker had played only a few weeks before just so that we could feel the spiritual rythim of music once more. I can only hope that we will have more of these wonderfull evenings with Carl, Archie, Roberto, Theo and Johny whom we all love

OUR WINTER

Its been a hard winter in Azogires ,not only due to the economical status of this Country but also due to the harsh winter that has followed .The paradise village has been so cold that you might be able to call it santas land ,but offcourse nothing lasts for ever here the cold is only temporaly ,and the rain will go away it still is sunny everyday and it still is a beautifull place to explore .I my self have had a chance to visit places such as you will see in the photos and for the first time I had time to enjoy them , the views the fresh air , and the Azogires spiritual aura.We made a snow man ? yes we had to go and steal the snow from Temenia cause we didnt have any, but we had fun doing it and we made the Alfa man who melted in the same evening like chocolate in the sun.I also had a chance with Joanna to go and visit the Azogires highlands as you might call them and we had a pic ninc , up there by one of my familys old cheese factorys ,yes the Koukoutsakis where sheperds as I am today and they had loads of sheep and Goats they had two small tirokomia a,k,a mountain cheese huts a cheese factory of the old and much brighter Cretan days ,the family man would stay up there for days and the women would visit them once a week they would milk the animals dayli and make fresh chesse right there and then they they would store the cheese inside underground caves the well known Cretan tripes , until some of them would load the cheese on to donkeys mules horses , or in most occasions on their bare back and safely get it back to the city to sell and consume milk was a valuable asset to Cretan economy .I also thought to go out and find the third water sistern down by the river that used to collect water for the higher flour mill that belonged to Gabriel papagrigorakis our local priest of those days and he formed a comitee leaving all his land to Azogires for the progress and good well being of this Village since then Azogires has had roads made jobs created nad much more thanks to him ,if you go back on my blog a few years you can read more about him , it was hard work cuting away all the bushes that kept it well hidden like and anceint Inkas temple inside the deep forests of south America but I was satisfied with the result as you can see now its another monument for Azogires visitors to see and enjoy that was kept well hidden for more then 90 years behind bushes

NATURES HEROES OF AZOGIRES

It was the 3rd of March, a bright and sunny saturday when 10 volunteers gathered to help us clean the roads of Azogires. They were brave and strong and sat a new example for mankind and humanity. They showed that if a man wants, a man can, and a woman off course. With volunteer work we can change the face of the planet, so thanks to people such as Arthur Jarvis, Jenny Neal, Bob Tait, Horst Schaab, my fiancee Ioanna, Martin Webster, Ann Billbourogh, and others who wished to stay anonymous Azogires is the paradise vilage again. Over 6 truck loads of trash of all sorts was gathered by these brave people and now the village is shining again. A week after the people of Anidri did exactly the same thing and they gathered more then double volunteers and the triple amount of trash. So in 2 weeks 2 villages are back to their natural pure clean and pretty form. We hope that others will follow this example and the world will be a cleaner place. For us, our children and the following generations. One thing is for sure; in Azogires we will continue this tradition at least once a year. For we have turned it into a festivity; after the clean up we sat down and ate lots of Sophia's Special omelets, salads and beverages made for us by my mother and ioanna, ok ok Arthur squeezed the oranges for the juice..A big thank you to you all.

EASTER 2012 AZOGIRES STYLE

Easter started rather special this year. In the beginning of Easterweek a Blues man showed up, he entertained us every night of his stay, playing blues on our old guitar together with his lovely wife. His name was Bogard and he had a heart of gold. I only wish that our very own brothers Carl Wyatt and Archie Lee Hooker were here to play along with him. I guess I can't have every wish come true, but it does not mean I stop dreaming. Then in the middle of the week we had strange customers eating the tabletops from our tables? Yes they were horses, 2 beautifull little creatures visiting us every day. And every day they broke free from their masters rope. Joanna loved them and so did I. We do miss them, at the same time though we are glad they are gone for 1 and only reason; that our tabletops get to survive another summer. Then came Easter friday, a quite sad day for Orthodox Christians for it symbolises the death of Christ. The women of the village all gathered in the morning with flowers, wild blossoms and thread and come to the monastery to dress the symbolic grave of Christ, which is an ark like box. In the afternoon arrives the priest who places an icon symbolising Christ in the middle of it and the worshippers one by one pay their respects. Then he takes the icon and the village youth carry the ark 3 times around the church. Then they hold it above the door and the worshippers pass under it, considering themselves blessed. The grave then comes back in the church, the priest reads little papers written by the people with names of their dead loved ones. According to religion it is the open hour were an Angel comes down, takes these names straight to God, where He gives a better position to them in heaven. Afterwords the priest asks the people to take the grave flowers home for blessing, good luck and to burn away evil. Before we went to the church though my good neighbor Horst and myself were to busy driving up and down the streets with binoculars trying to rescue some really nice people that got lost on the Azogires- Anidri path. So I made it to church just in time for the ceramony. Then on saturday at 22.00 in the evening the priest came to the Monastery to burn Judas, bringing us the holy flame to take home to bless our houses with. This is done by making a cross above our doors and to bring Jesus back to life. It is a very strong ceramony that finishes with fireworks. The energy is unbelievable. Then on Easter sunday all the meat comes on the table and the families sit down to eat. Some days later we finshed partying with Arthur's birthday. Yes, he was 29 again. A man who's presence is essential to Azogires. For those who know Arthur will understand why his birthdaycake was made from Mythos beer. A very special thank you to Horst Schaab and his wife Annamaria for the lovely easter Rabbit and Lamb cake. Her cakes are amazing, so amazing that we have desceided to have easter every sunday. I hope she reads this, cause I'm getting hungry again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3W1HxB7xtU&list=UU95bx15Ykqv3A_btH356GtQ&index=1&feature=plcp

MAY AND ITS MAGICAL MOMENTS

May is a month full of natures joy. From the ancient days May was a very important month, even its name in Greek 'Mayos' means 'Maya' meaning Magic! The month where witches, sorcerors, magicians and spiritual leaders demonstrate and practise their magic and their ritualistic ceramonies. All over the world May is the month of blossoms, beautifull flowers and shiny rich greenery. All over the world it is a month where animals become active, if you know what I mean. In Azogires it was always a month where people rejoyce and enjoy the magic of nature. Azogires has a long history of spirituality, religious and not, and even bigger history of black and white magic. The old ladies of the village always hid in the dark caves of Azogires late at night around the time of may, to cast their magical spells. Even today there are rumours that its still taking place. Even though the Orthodox religion is deep in our hearts, certain people still practice the old ways. For me and my family May started with a beautifull hike along the river to enjoy the blossoming olivetrees that age between 500 and 2000 years old. We then made our way up to the mountain in order to celebrate the international free day of 1st of May 'Protomaya'. We cooked wild goat and drank loads of thirty year old red wine. Ioanna on the other hand did not approve of our heavy meat eating habits, so she cooked mushrooms and aubergines on the grill. We were so drunk that we actually ate it, and you know what it was wonderfull. She caried me on her back all the way home, yes she is a strong lady. To strong for me. For the rest of the month we enjoyed picking wild sage and thyme in full blossom.

TREE ELEPHANT IN AZOGIRES

It was early last week when three rather handsome gentleman walked into the cafe, and took a seat under the mulberry tree. While they were enjoying their drink, one looks up upon the sky and shouts "We are about to be crushed by an elephant!" They called me at once and I ran to the rescue. Only to realize that it was an harmless tree elephant. The funny part is; he is been in the Alfa cafe yard since 1952, and no one ever noticed him before, besides these three charming gentleman. We all now are trying to be nice to this elephant, I myself have been trying to give him some peanuts, but he still refuses to eat them. As a tree though? he loves the water from the hosepipe that Ioanna gives him every day. Next time you are in Azogires, and you happen to see any sort of funny tree or stone like creature, please take photo's and we will post them, so that they may be also enjoyed by the world.

FAMILY CONSTELLATIONS IN AZOGIRES

A SUCCESFULL RESCUE OPERATION

On one of the hottest days in July 3 brave people walked al the way to Azogires enjoying the beautifull mountainviews and the sight of Azogires. Little did they now? that just 8 hours later they would be lost in the heart of it without water and with the mobilephone as their only hope. They walked to Azogires with great joy in their hearts cause even though some people write in certain books not to walk to Azogires along the road, cause it is hot and sunny, it's not true. It is a beautifull 6 km walk that leaves you stunning.
Any way to get back to our story, after they visited the monastery they started to walk the path to Anidri. But.. cause of wrong markings they went the wrong way and they kept walking and walking and walking down into the most wild landscape of Azogires. Till their water runned out, untill their hope died and until they realized that they were lost. At once they phoned their tourist operator who allerted the authorities. I had just returned from the waterfall, after having had a cooling swim. And I see a white jeep with a sirine on top. They were the citizens protection group of Paleochora-Selinou. A group who is funded in order to protect and to rescue visitors and citizens of this area. From my cafe the rescue operstion started. Since we did not know where they were lost I went downhill and Ioanna with her rescue dog Capone went uphill. As Clinton the orange and white dog that you see on the picture, stayd home to watch the fort. When I was down the police was already there searching along the road for signs of life. And finally we heard a woman saying hello hello, and we knew where they were. I took my walking stick, binoculairs and off course my feet with sandals on and walked over bushes to reach them. we found first the woman, who was in good health and further the men. After making a brief meeting it was understood, we could not carry them up, it was too steep, too hot and too dangerous.Ioanna with the brave Capone, came down with water that gave them life again. We went all slowly up through Oleander bushes to the more civilised area of Azogires. My father, the firedepartment and the medics came straight to us. And succesfully everyone was rescued barely with a scratch. a few days later we met the people in our cafe and we realized they were so nice we would be honered to rescue them again a big thanks to everyone who made this operation a success.
